Wyatt: Four Months

Wyatt turned four months last Thursday.

Where does time go? (I know, I know, welcome to the rest of my life) This has been the best month yet. (Do I say that every month?)

He is developing more of a personality and playing with him is SO much fun. He’s having less fussy periods and more alert and happy periods. But boy, when he does have a fussy time he is REALLY fussy. Like screaming bloody murder until he passes out. It’s not fun. But his happy moods far outweigh his bad ones. He’s so alert and happy to discover the world around him. I’m feeling much more alert now too, like I’m gaining my sanity back!

Weight: 13 pounds 4 ounces (20 percentile)

Length: 26 inches (85 percentile)

Hair: Dark brown

Eyes: Blue

Nicknames: Wy, Wy Guy, Mr. Man. Mr. Stinky (I tried to stop this one, but it seems to be sticking around)

Likes: Being talked and sung to, hanging out on his activity mat, trying to roll over, looking at books, stuffed animals with big eyes, hanging out in his rock and play, looking at the Christmas tree, being swung. Being tickled.

Dislikes: Going down for a nap. He now cries and cries and needs to be swung (almost at a violent speed) asleep. Getting his diaper changed when he’s hungry.

Clothing and Diapers: Still in 0-3 month clothing and size 1 diapers. He’s our skinny little guy.  He also wears his cloth diapers on the days we are at home. I prefer the Grovia brand.

Sleep: At night he still sleeps in the Arms Reach Co-Sleeper attached to my side of the bed. We experienced a little bit of sleep regression this month. He wasn’t gaining weight as well as I he should, so I had to wake up him to feed (and pump, ugh) for a little bit and I think he got used to doing that again. So, goodbye sleeping through the night! Luckily we passed that phase and on average he’s sleeping 7-8 hours again. He also takes 2-3 naps per day as well.

Feeding: He eats every 3 hours (or less during the day.) Lately, he’s been a fussier eater, getting distracted very easily. It makes breastfeeding a little stressful these days.

Milestones: Laughing. Holding up held slightly more during tummy time. Rolling over from back to tummy (almost!). Holding up head when we are holding him over our shoulder. Going from 3.5 ounces to 5 ounces of breast milk per feeding. Sleeping through the night (most nights).

Wyatt is up and alert much more during the day and can get bored pretty easily. He likes lying on his activity mat/piano gym and staring and grabbing at his “friends” as we call them.

He has started to grab for things but hasn’t quite mastered a fully functional grip yet.

His favorite toys are stuffed animals with big eyes. He loves to stare at them and talk to them.

However, Wyatt is most entertained when we sit up on our lap or on his rock and play have conversations with him. He’s a chatty little guy and loves to smile. As soon as you look at him and smile he’s quick to return a bright smile.

He constantly has his fingers, or whole fist in his mouth. Whenever he has something new in his hand it goes directly into his mouth.

He’s very intrigued by our phones, which makes me so conscious of when I’m overusing it. He seems to know when I’m taking a picture now too.

Wyatt still can’t live without his wubanubs. I sometimes hate that I find myself giving it to him all the time, but he’s so content with it and sometimes it’s the only thing that calms him down. I hope he doesn’t get too addicted and is still sucking on it when it’s time to go off to college!

Health Issues:

Torticollis: He’s doing SO much better. As of last week he is officially discharged from Physical Therapy! Wohoo!

Weight: Doing great!

Back to Work: The truth: it hasn’t gotten easier. But we have a routine and we make it work.

What I want to remember:

His giggles. So adorable.

How he recognizes my face and voice now.

How determined he looks when trying to roll over.

My appreciation when he DOES breastfeed well. Such contentment all around.

Lazy mornings together.

Dear Wyatt,

Oh the fun we are having! When you sleep through the night, you wake up rested and ready to take on the day. We have so much fun together, laughing, talking in funny voices, singing, and looking at books. The days go by so fast and I can’t believe how fast you are growing. You are so determined to do big boy stuff like hold your head up and roll over. I love the proud grin you have after you accomplished something new. Christmas was such a joy together and you are so spoiled by all our family and friends. What a gift you are!

Love, Mommy

  • the 4 month sleep regression is real. (and unfortunately so is the 6 month, 9 month, and for us, the 18 month). best app I downloaded for my own peace of mind was the wonder weeks app. it just helps explain the fussy periods a little better. doesn’t solve them, but makes you feel less insane. 🙂 and also, no worries on the wubbanub. we moved Amelia down to only having them at naptime and bedtime at 13 months, which we think will make it easier to take them away permanently (we’re planning at 2). but you know what, no kid has a pacifier in kindergarten, they all get rid of them eventually, so if he loves them, so what? you are doing such a good job, you can tell by that little smiley face!

Ah, I’m so glad I can commiserate with you…I’ve been having a rough time with it. I’ve heard about the Wonder Weeks app and did some reading online earlier but went ahead and downloaded the app this weekend. It’s nice to look at multiple times in the middle of the night to serve as a reminder that this is just a phase and that there is an actual reason he’s not sleeping. That’s good that you were able to wean her off the wubanub. Thank you for the encouragement, it’s just what I needed this weekend.

  • What a cutie!!!! And look at him rolling over!!! Such a big boy 🙂 Glad mommy is getting some sanity back!

I love watching him do all his new tricks. He’s so proud of himself 🙂 And yay for sanity (and coffee)

Oh Katie! Your little Wy Guy is so beautiful and precious and perfect! Blessings for your whole family! Love you lots. ??

Thank you!! We are smitten. Come visit soon!

  • I’m so happy to hear that he’s done with PT! Yay!

    • kwalshmac

Big relief! There is so much anxiety in those early days, it’s hard to remember that some of those early transitions are only temporary. I hope you and baby Jack are doing well! Much love.

  • He is so gosh darn cute!! In his little jeans! I die!! We got super lucky and passed right over the sleep regression (I HAVE NO IDEA WHY, BUT I WON’T QUESTION IT!! 🙂 ). It is so hard when they start getting distracted when they’re eating. Sheffield wants to just STARE at the dog the whole time and keeps twisting his head!!

Baby giggles have got to be the sweetest sound in the entire world! I’m so glad he’s done with PT – that sweetness is thriving!

Baby jeans are soooo cute. That’s awesome that he didn’t have any sleep regressions, wohoo!! Wyatt loves staring at Maggie while he’s eating too. I hope it means they will be the very best of friends when he’s a little older 🙂 No matter how bad of a day I’m having, if I can come home to his giggles, all is right in the world.

  • It’s so crazy how much bigger Wyatt looks already! He is so adorable – especially those giggles. Glad to hear you’re getting your sanity back, I can imagine it has been a crazy few months!

He grows everyday! He’s getting so long that he grows out of his cute outfits like crazy. Sanity comes and goes 😉
