Fall Catch Up

How is it already November? I loved seeing everyone’s Halloween costumes this weekend. We had fun with our little pumpkin.

As I’ve been mostly MIA I thought I’d give a little update on to how life currently is.

We’ve had a busy and eventful Fall. Here are the big things we’ve been up to:

  • Loving life with Wyatt. It should be no surprise that my life now revolves around my little man. I’m trying to soak up as much time as I can before I go back to work. (more on that below)

  • Life with a newborn is everything I imagined and nothing like I imagined. Some days time goes by so fast and other days seem to last an eternity. I feel like I have so much time and but then really have no time to do anything. I’m now driving again, not driving for 7 weeks was very hard. It’s a huge mood lifter to be able to get out of the house on my own or take walks with Wyatt. He’s such a good baby though, save for a general “witching hour” between 5-7 pm. I love all the cuddles.   image2 (1)
  • Celebrating the fact that Ryan passed the bar! We got the great news on October 9 and have been celebrating ever since. I was not surprised that he passed, but relieved that the stress of waiting to find out is over. He’s now busy applying for jobs after his clerkship, we hope to stay in the Lancaster area, so fingers crossed! ryanbar
  • Celebrating my Pop-Pop’s 90th Birthday! We had a huge party (89 guests! Can you believe a 90-year-old has that many friends?) for him on October 11. Fun was had by all and it was an honor to celebrate him and his love filled life with so many family and friends. P1000899
  • Spending a lot of time with  family. I love that Wyatt (and I) has such a strong supportive family. It really does take a village.  eandv

  • Going out on our first date since the baby. In typical new mom fashion, I got tipsy after one cocktail and we talked about the baby the whole night. image5 (1)
  • Learning to survive on little sleep. It’s still the hardest part of life with a newborn for me. The other day I almost went to the grocery store with my yoga pants inside out. Oops.
  • Accepting bad news and transitioning roles: Last week I learned that roles at my work have been reorganized and my current workload and hours have been cut in half. I am still going back to work in two weeks, but only part-time. This was very hard news to accept. Sadly we need my income so this hits us pretty hard. It will be a struggle but we can handle it together. On the positive side I will have more time with Wyatt, which is huge. This news amongst Ryan passing the bar and loving his job feels almost like two steps forward one step back. As one friend told me, Wyatt will benefit from extra time with me and will never know that we have less money. I do believe things happen for a reason. We have Wyatt and everyone is healthy. This baby smile keeps me going!

Currently: Freezing

IMG_5287.JPG

It’s freezing outside and my brain is barely working.

-20 degrees with windchill and no signs of approving. My garage door is smart. It refuses to work when it is this cold. My car doesn’t even have a chance to warm up and start pumping out heat by the time I get to work. Everything is frozen. And I’m over it. What was it like to wear stylish clothes? Shoes that are not Uggs? Have clean hair every day? (I’m procrastinate washing my hair because it’s too cold to have wet hair). Our gas company called and kindly requested we keep our thermostat at 65 degrees of below. They are worried about outages. Meanwhile, my face hurts and breathing feels like death. Over it.

Here’s a more of peek into my current world:

Reading: I just finished Jodi Picoult’s newest book, “Leaving Time”. It wasn’t one of my top favorites of her books but still a good distraction when the only way to stay warm is bundled up in bed. I’ll be sharing another “recently read” next week.

Watching: With Parenthood officially over (and I’m still crying, so many babies!) I needed a new family drama. There really isn’t that many real life family dramas on TV anymore. It’s all action pack, crime filled, mystery fueled, shows. I like a good emotionally charged drama. I was surprised to find it in ABC Family’s “The Fosters”. This show is good! Sure it has it’s moments of overly teenage drama but on a whole it’s a good show. I binged on Netflix and am now caught up.

Wanting: Isn’t this obvious? Warm Weather. Now.

Thinking: About where we will be moving to this summer. I wish I knew what was in store and we could anticipate what housing will available come June/July.

Needing: I know it’s wrong to want to skip ahead and I should really be enjoying the moment, I want winter to be over so that, yes, we can experience some normal temperature. But also because we are almost near the end of Ryan’s law school career. His last day of classes is on April 27 and he graduates May 21. This last semester seems to be dragging out for him and he’s experiencing some major “senioritis”. Let’s just get through these last few weeks! Freedom is so close.

Cooking: I’ve been on a big pizza kick lately. I think because it’s easy and warm.  Also not cooking and eating a lot of Mexican food. See also, warm, cheesy, carb heavy. Perfect winter food.

Listening: To the Jimmy Buffett Margaritaville station on Sirius Radio. I don’t care if that makes me a 50-year-old, I love how it makes me feel like I’m at the beach sipping a fruity drink and listening to the waves crash. I try. See margarita above.

Planning For: Birthday month in March! Ryan turns the big 3-0 and I turn 32 (yikes!)

I’d love to hear what you’ve been up to lately! Let me know below!

newcar

Hello friends, life this Spring is flying by. I’ve been busy enjoying the sunshine and being outside and doing less computer work and blogging, as it should be.

My biggest news is shown above. Yes,I went and got a big girl car! This past Saturday,Ryan and I purchased a Kia Sorento. I feel so adult! Ryan’s old Corolla wasn’t going to make it another year past inspection, it was time to say goodbye to it and get a car we could grow into over the next few years. So far I’m liking the space and the ride.

Here’s a more of peak into my current world:

Reading: I’m currently reading Tell The Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rifka Brunt. I’m only about 50 pages in but already love the writing and characters.

Tell the Wolves I'm Home

Before starting this book I read the Divergent Series…and was completely disappointed in the three books. I didn’t really even get invested in the story or characters until the very end of book two. You know how sometimes you want to prolong a book because you’re not ready to say goodbye to the characters yet? I experienced the opposite with Divergent series. I couldn’t wait for it to be over so I could move on to another book. The writing was dry and I just didn’t care too much about the characters.  Am I in the minority here?

Watching: All my favorite shows finales. Revenge left me gasping, Nashville had me all emotional, Reign had me wanting more teenage ancient history drama, The Mindy Project had me bawling and smiling at the same time, was that not the cutest episode ever?

Wanting: The weather to make up its mind, one day it is beautiful and 70 and the next it’s 60 and pouring all day. But I do have to say that there have been more warmer days lately than not. Other than small things like the weather, my wants are more centered around where we’re going to be in the next year or two. But I’m coming to terms that whatever will be will be.

Thinking: Why do the winter months have to drag and then once the sun comes out the days fly by? I can’t believe that it is almost June…and our one year anniversary on June 2. I’m reflecting a lot back on our first married year these days. Also about how cute and happy Maggie is to be running free outside.

maggie may running outside
Needing: To get away. Really looking forward to our first anniversary trip to the Finger Lakes in two weeks. A whole weekend of nothing to worry about except what wineries to go to and what book to read lakeside.

Smelling: All the loveliness of outdoors (and the unloveliness too, fresh manure in the fields anyone?)

Loving: Having Ryan home in the evenings since he is not taking any classes this summer. Also ice cream. I can’t get enough ice cream these days. My favorite is at a local creamery with over 20 flavors.

katie ice cream at carmen and davids
Cooking: Really not cooking anything too intricate these days. It’s been busy busy busy leaving less time in the kitchen. Prepping some of my basics like my favorite chicken salad, sweet potatoes, and spaghetti squash and enjoying fresh fruit.

Listening: To soft folksy music like James Taylor as well as to my heart. The music is easy on my soul and gets me relaxed and happy feeling. “Up On The Roof” as been on repeat lately. I’m trying to slow things down and really be in the moment rather than constantly just thinking about what’s next and being anxious about our unknown future.

Planning For: All sorts of summer fun including our one year anniversary trip, my best friend’s bachelorette weekend, summer weddings, and our family trip to Jamaica! And for my mom to recover from her surgery so she can be out and about and we can do things together again.

I’d love to hear what you’ve been up to lately! Let me know below!

life lately katie

It’s been awhile since I used this space to do a little life update. To fill the space in between the lines, to ramble randomly, to give a peek into my every day life. So this is what current life is looking like:

Reading: I just finished the delightful book, Where’d You Go Bernadette? by Maria Semple in two days. It was charming, witty, laugh out loud funny and touching at the same time. Highly recommend it.

where'd you go bernadette

Watching: We watched “About Time” this weekend and loved it. A cute rom com about a time traveler who want to perfect his relationships, both romantic and family. It reminds us all to slow things down a bit and appreciate the beauty of every day. You don’t get any repeats in real life.

Wanting: It to be Spring with warmer temps. To throw my boots in the very back of my closet to not be seen again until next October. For Ryan’s semester to be over. The past two weeks have been really hard on him and subsequently us. He has one more month of this semester left then he’s off school all summer! Freedom! I get my husband back full-time!

ryan tuac

Thinking: When will I ever learn to live in the present? (see above) I’m always pushing for the next season, the next event, to fast forward to the future, but to quote About Time, “We’re all traveling through time together, every day of our lives. All we can do is do our best to relish this remarkable ride.” Plus, I’m 31 now. 31! I was okay with 30 – it was still a transition age. Now 31 sounds like I need to be more settled, more comfortable with the here and now. Will that day ever come?

Needing: To go grocery shopping. It rained ALL weekend. Sunday was non stop pouring complete with flooding. I had zero desire to leave the house and run errands.

Smelling: Spring. It makes an appearance some days but then hides away and the 30 degree temps creep back in. But when it’s here, I can smell things growing and warming up.

Loving: All the celebrations we were able to fit in for Ryan and I’s birthdays this past week. Between dinners out with friends, family, and also just the two of us we really lived it up this past week. We had our final celebration on Saturday night with a dinner out with both of our parents. It’s rare that both of our families get all together.

katie and ryan birthday

Cooking: Spaghetti Squash everything. Pad Thai, Vegetarian Pesto, Mac and Cheese, I never considered all the uses for Spaghetti Squash! It’s so filling too.

Listening: A whole lotta pop. Don’t judge. I need something to cheer me up from this glummy winter we are STILL experiencing. Hopefully Katy, and Demi, and Taylor will carry me into Spring.

Planning For: My best friends bridal shower which is a month away! Other than the date and venue, it’s all a surprise for her. I can’t wait!

I’d love to hear what you’ve been up to lately! Let me know below!

Life Lately

20140218-093523.jpg

It’s been awhile since I used this space to do a little life update. To fill the space in between the lines, to ramble randomly, to give a peek into my every day life. So this is what current life is looking like:

Writing: in my One Sentence 5-year Journal from The Happiness Project. My best friend gave me this journal as a Christmas gift and I love it! The idea is to write one sentence each day. It’s an easy way to document moments from each day and be aware of your daily intentions and actions. It will be fun to look back at what I did on a particular day – 2, 3, 4, or 5 years ago!

Reading: The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro. Already entranced by this novel by a favorite author (loved Never Let Me Go).

Watching: Best thing about Sunday is the Sunday light TV line up: Downton Abbey, The Walking Dead, True Detective, and Girls. Obssessed with all of them, even if watching them all in the same two days makes me think that there are two alcoholic and twisted detectives running around an English estate trying to kill zombies while Hannah watches pool side contemplating how insufferable her life is.

Thinking: That I can’t take much more of winter. Enough is enough! Last week we were hit with another 12 inches of snow, followed by 2 more on Saturday and another 2 last night.

big pile of snow

Needing: To get into spring cleaning mode. Winter has made me a lazy hermit. It’s time to clean out the house, revamp my workout routine and get in gear with some new meal planning. The past weekend was filled with a lot of this:

And although it was relaxing and wonderful and great – it was too much sleeping and eating and drinking and not enough taking care of my body. Remember when I posed about that pesky newlywed weight gain? Well it’s still there. I failed at following through with any changes – or, when I did, two weeks last that weight gain found its way back. Like the snow, it just keep packing on. I’m ready to shovel out.

I signed up for Weight Watchers online yesterday with a great President’s Day sale. The program helped me lose 15 pounds 10 years ago and helped me tone up last Spring. I love the simplicity and the ease and the ability to each pretty much whatever you want. I know that I need the support and the motivation to take charge or else I fall into lazy habits.

Wanting: It may be caused by cabin fever – but my baby fever is so intense right now. It’s pretty disgusting/bad. Other than that – I’m having a deep need to get new drapes for all our windows, and do a lot of at home projects. Also NEW spring clothes!

Smelling: This candle. It is from the heavens. I’m sure of it.

Raspberry Peach Macaron candle

Loving: The 5-day weekend that was granted to Ryan because of the snow. I loved having so much down time with him and Maggie and lots of morning snuggles:

puppy cuddles

Cooking: A LOT! Hence the need to do something about weight! This past week were filled with cookies, cupcakes, pad thai, macaroni and cheese, quesadillas, dip, martinis, and spiked hot chocolate. Yikes!

spiced hot chocolate

Listening: to my Ella Fitzgerald Panda station – her butter voice just pours over the whole house and makes everything warm and okay.

Planning For: This Spring is full of fun events! First, we have Ryan and I’s birthdays in March followed by a bridal shower and bachelorette for my best friend, and we just booked our 1-year wedding anniversary trip. Come on SPRING!

I’d love to hear what you’ve been up to lately!
